Dayara Bugyal – “An Astounding High Altitude Meadow”
Dayara Bugyal At a Glance :
Tucked away amidst towering snow clad Himalayan peaks, Dayara Bugyal is an Astounding high altitude meadow in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Dayara Bugyal is blessed with far stretching lush green meadows & is a perfect location to seek enlightenment (Be Kidding), But definitely Dayara Bugyal is a promising place to find peace & serenity as it is distant from civilizations. Dayara offers widespread glasslands & an unpredictable weather (How..?? I will show you in a bit). The glimpse of Gangotri I, II & III, Bandarpoonch, Bhagirathi Peaks & more are breathtaking. Barsu a village around 45 kms from Uttarkashi acts as a base camp for the treks to Dayara & Bakaria Top. Nestled at an altitude of 2234 mts Barsu is a picturesque location & a base camp for treks to Barnala Tal, Dayara Bugyal & Bakaria Top. One can stay overnight at Barsu in the GMVN guest houses which are reasonable & the food is great. You can rent your tent, Sleeping Bag, Mat & every Required equipment from GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) & that too for very reasonable price.

Detailed Travel Itinerary :
Day 1 – Haridwar to Barsu
Start your Journey by reaching Haridwar, you can stay overnight at Haridwar, visit Temples & Ghats. Now starting from Haridwar, take a bus to Gangotri (In Yatra Season only), Otherwise take an early morning bus to Uttarkashi. If You board a Bus to Gangotri, get down on Bhatwari because the way to Barsu or Raithal branches off from bhatwari. You have to reach Bhatwari on time then you can decide which village to choose as your base camp.
Note – There are two paths to trek to Dayara Bugyal :
– First Route (My Favorite) starts from a Tiny Hamlet called Barsu. I liked the Trek Route from Barsu as you can witness Barnala Lake on your way to Dayara, Yeah… I’ll admit that the trail is a bit Longer & Steep but it is totally Worth the Pain. Plus you can stay at Barsu at GMVN Guest Houses and the location is perfect (you can see in the image above) to start your Journey. You can rent everything (Tent, Sleeping bag, Trekking pole, Mat etc) from GMVN in Barsu.
– Second Route (Easier as we were told) starts From another village called Raithal. Raithal is at equal distance (10 kms) as Barsu is from Bhatwari, so It’s your call totally..!! Trek from Raithal is easier as there are less steep paths and you can stay overnight at Raithal & start your trek next morning. Plus if you want porters to carry your Tents & Ration you will get one easily in Raithal. We were helped by local porters from Raithal as they were with a group from Chennai. The weather here is very unpredictable, so I’ll advise you to bring porters and cooks with you. Don’t worry about the prices, the prices are quite reasonable.
Porter – Bhagwan singh Rana ( Mob. – 09690417598 )
Guide – Gopal Rawat ( Mob. – 07534920998 )
You can contact them once you reach Raithal rest of the arrangement will be made by them. You will be taken via Goey to Dayara.
Day 2 – Barsu to Dayara Bugyal
Okay, so Today is the Big day, You start your trek from Barsu to Dayara. Once you start walking from the GMVN Guest Houses towards Dayara, Don’t Forget to ask for the Direction to Dayara from the locals, as i walked the wrong path (My Bad). Also There are Yellow Arrow like marks (–>) on Stones & Trees to guide you through the way to Dayara. After your strenuous 4 hours trek, the First Glimpse of the Green prairies (Bugyals) Just before Barnala Lake will Rejuvenate you to the core. And Later the view of the Barnala Lake will encourage you to advance on the trek to Dayara (Here, Take a Look).
This is exactly the sequence of your Trek Journey till Barnala Lake.
Okay… Let’s start the trek again, Dayara Bugyal is around 3 kms from Barnala Lake, So keep up and follow the Yellow Arrow Marks & eventually you will reach Dayara in another 3 Hours. Don’t forget to carry warm Clothes as it is chilling in Dayara, plus the rain & the wind aids more to the Cold Weather. The first glimpse of Dayara will be somewhat like this…..
Once you reach Dayara, Pitch your tent near any water source, (Thats a mandate) but if you have porters and cooks with you, you need not to worry, they will arrange everything. we pitched our tent in the most astonishing area with wide angle views from the inside of our tents (Let the Photograph do the Talking).
After pitching your tent and eating your dinner, Retire for the day & take a good night sleep (That’s very important).
Day 3 – Dayara to Bakaria Top
After your Peaceful Long night sleep, get ready to trek to Bakaria Top. Bakaria Top Is situated at an elevation of 3810 mts and is the highest point in the proximity. It is around 3 kms from Dayara Bugyal and will take you around 3 to 4 Hours to reach this point. The Top Blesses its visitants with a 360° Panoramic views of lofty snow clad Himalayan peaks. The Trail mainly has unpaved paths, But Surprisingly it is easier to trek on those unpaved paths since the soil provides a firm hold on land.
After Your Rejuvenating experience at Bakaria top, Roll down to your camp to sit back & feast your eyes on the Dazzling Himalayan Peaks.
Well… that’s what we thought, but when we came back to Dayara, a Surprise was waiting for us, I told you about the uncertainty of the weather here..remember..?? well…see for yourself….The Green Prairies (Bugyals In Garhwali) turned white..!!

Also if you want test your stamina, you can go for the trek to Gomukh Glacier from Gangotri (It’s a Tough Trek).
