Kheerganga – “An Offbeat Destination”
Kheerganga undeniably is an offbeat destination in the Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh. Being already famous for it’s Hot Springs & clear sky, Kheerganga has more to offer. Camouflaged at an altitude of 2960 mts & Guarded by the lush green forest through which the trail to Kheerganga passes, It’s a well hidden gem.
Kheerganga is around 28 kms from Kasol & around 22 kms from Manikaran. You start From Kasol (Read about Kasol), You can Hike or use local Transport till Manikaran. Manikaran (Around 6 kms from Kasol) is famous for the Gurudwara (Manikaran Sahib) which every year attracts many sikh pilgrims. After Manikaran the only way to reach Kheerganga is to trek from Barshaini, till Kheerganga.
Little Flash to the History :
There are quite a few stories linked to the origin of this place. But, I am going to narrate the most nearly believed story.
Once Kartikeya (Son of Lord Shiva & Parvati) was passing through the forests of kheerganga, and had stopped to rest & meditate. After the meditation, Kartikeya cooked Kheer (a Rice Pudding from the cuisine of the Indian Subcontinent ) for himself. But the bowl of Kheer somehow slipped from the hands of kartikeya & fell into a hole. From where a source of water was oozing out. Since then, It is assumed that the hot springs in Kheerganga are a result of that fallen bowl that kartikeya didn’t bother to pick up. Jokes apart, But It is believed to be the reason why the water of kheerganga is slightly whitish & the existence of the Hot Springs in Kheerganga.
Thanks Little Lord.
Guidebook To Kheerganga :
Okay!!! Let’s start with how you’d get there..???
what should you do when you get there.???
& Where to stay….when you get there…!!
— In order to reach Kheerganga, you need to first arrive at Kasol (Read about Kasol). If you take my advice, Board an overnight bus to Manali & get down at Bhunter (this will save you one night stay at kasol). You will reach Bhunter at around uhmm!! 8 am. Then use the local transport to reach Kasol (Bus fare 45 INR). Explore Kasol if you haven’t been to kasol before, then again use public transport to reach Manikaran. Pay homage to the Sikh Deity & board a bus to Barshaini.
Note – Now that you have reached Barshaini, you can either trek to Tosh (Recommended) Or continue your way to kheerganga.
We started from Kasol On Foot, as it is just 6kms on a plane road till Manikaran. After our Langar & Seva, We boarded a local bus from Manikaran till Barshaini. After deboarding the bus at Barshaini, we started our trek to TOSH Village & reached Tosh at around 8 pm. Stayed Overnight at Tosh, Then trekked down to Barshaini as there is no Route (I suppose) directly from Tosh to Kheerganga.
TIRED..!! all of us, had our lunch at a hotel in Barshaini.
Note – As there are no ATMs in Barshaini or Tosh, I’d suggest you to carry Cash with you. Or You can Swipe your Card & get Cash In a hotel called Hotel Blue Diamond in Tosh for a 10% Commission. But don’t expect that in Kheerganga.
Okay!! After our delicious lunch at Barshaini we started our Trek to Kheerganga. It is around 12 kms from Barshaini with a mix of ‘Hiking to Trekking’ Trail. The first amazing thing you will experience on the way will be :
These towering mountains are a beauty to gaze upon, You will then witness a wooden bridge that passes over parvati river to connect you to your Destination. Let the Photographs Guide you through your path. Here.. Take a Look.
After this Bridge, the next thing you will notice is, a Waterfall & Few Huts.
These are few sights, that you are going to witness on this trail. This trail passes through dense oak & pine forest and you will pass through 3 bridges majorly and many landslides kind of waterfall. The trek is a mix of steep & gentle paths, the cold breeze & the scenic views of the Vistas will rejuvenate you to the core.
Accommodation here is not a problem, If you want a room, a Tent or anything you’ll get it here. I’d recommend staying in a tent if the sky is clear and being a spectator of infinite stars. Yeah…The View of the sky is like (Loads of white dots spilled on a Black canvas).
So the Idea is to ditch your mundane life for a while and explore the horizons of the nature. Trust me this is an offbeat destination for an offbeat traveller. Don’t miss the chance & be the narrator of this beautiful vista.
